Two more relief ships Jaffna bound

COLOMBO: Two relief ships from the Colombo and Trincomalee harbours will arrive in Jaffna within this week carrying dry rations and essential food items to the people of the peninsula, including those internally displaced in the North and East provinces.

Essential Services Commissioner S. B. Divaratne told the Daily News that the ship Liverpool carrying nearly 3,000 metric tonnes of dry rations and essential food items.

He said the Government has so far spent around Rs. 600 million with assistance also from the World Food Programme to procure relief items to the people of conflict-hit areas.

The relief ship Viduruwa Valley carrying nearly 3,000 metric tonnes with rice and other essential food including dhal, sugar, milk powder, cereals and other nutritional food items is due to leave for Jaffna on September 24. He said the loading is being carried out at the Colombo harbour.

Another ship named Hindm carrying 400 metric tonnes of flour and 500 metric tonnes of sugar will arrive in Jaffna on September 22. The loading is being done at the Trincomalee harbour.
